Today, we have a guest blog from Shivani Zala, an AIESECer from Ottawa! Check out her take on comfort zones and why you should move past it.
Getting Comfortable Outside Your Comfort Zone
Imagine if you were blowing up a balloon that was in a box. The more air you blow, the bigger the balloon will get. However, the balloon won’t grow any bigger than the size of the box it’s in, basically restricting the balloon. This analogy can be compared in the same way your comfort zone works. Staying inside it will limit yourself from becoming the best you can be.
Why should you step out of your comfort zone? It can be very unsettling, especially when you are faced with the unknown. However, doing this inspires innovation, increases productivity, and instigates agility.
Seeking new experiences allows you to gain various different perspectives. Whether it be a positive or negative experience, you will always leave a situation having learned something new. Gaining these new skills and opening the door to new viewpoints will inspire innovation and lead to the creation of new ideas.
Comfort kills productivity because without the urgency of deadlines you will never be able to accomplish your task. If you aren’t challenging your abilities, then you aren’t using your time efficiently. Pushing your personal boundaries can really force you to find creative solutions to your problems.
Fear of Failure
Finally, by constantly taking risks and challenging yourself with what fears you the most, you have more control over the uncertainty and fear of failure. Once you start stepping out of your comfort zone, it becomes easier to take more risks. Furthermore, you develop a sense of self confidence knowing that regardless any situation you are put in; by the end of it you’ll be completely fine.
If we take that balloon out of the box, not only will we be able to blow more air into it but it will also be able to fly higher than ever before. The same can be said for your comfort zone; if you step outside it, you’ll be able to discover the different heights you can reach and realize your true potential.
